25 years on from Dover lorry tragedy that claimed 58 lives

00:00on the 18th of june 2000 58 chinese men and women passed away after suffocating in the back of a
00:08lorry during an attempt to reach the uk they were found when dover custom officers carried out what
00:14was supposed to be a routine check when looking in the back of the lorry they found out of 60 people
00:21only two men had survived driver perry wacker claimed he did not know what or who he was
00:27carrying but a jury did not believe him and he was jailed for 14 years for manslaughter 25 years later
00:35this tragic incident is not a one-off event in recent years dozens have drowned trying to cross
00:42the english channel there's no safety is being provided safe food for them to be able to kind of
00:47apply there and then so that's why like i feel like the need for humanitarian visa should be approached
00:53that needed the government to deal with it despite being one of the worst losses linked
00:57to human trafficking it's often forgotten about we we need to remember them and mark this occasion
01:05because in the remembering and the marking i hope what we are saying is we must redouble our efforts
01:13to make sure that this does not happen again the anniversary of the tragedy falls in refugee week
01:22and ceo of kent refugee action network dr razia sheriff has said with its theme of community as a superpower
